Context-aware scalable multimedia content delivery platform for heterogeneous mobile devices
Abstract
The vision of making any multimedia content to be always accessible toevery mobile user over the network is great challenge. There are two majorobstacles. First, the network capacity limits the amount and the quality ofmultimedia content that can be made available to every user at each timeinstant. Secondly, it is extremely difficult for the user to browse and searchfor the desired content from the huge multimedia library that is available. The work in this paper aims to address these obstacles to a certain extent. Inorder to overcome the adverse effect of the bandwidth limitation on thequality and quantity of the delivered multimedia content, we propose using theSVC and adaptive layered streaming approach. The second problem is addressedby utilizing context-aware personal content adaptation and efficient metadataprocessing to reduce the burden of user navigation in the large pool of mediacontent. A proof-of-concept prototype that integrates the two technologies wasdeveloped. Cross country test trials were conducted to demonstrate thecapabilities and practical use cases of the integrated context-aware scalablemultimedia content delivery system for heterogeneous mobile devices.
