Energy conversion by multiferroic phase transformation
Abstract
<p>A thermodynamic model of a new method for the direct conversion of heat to electricity using the martensitic phase transformation from a non-ferromagnetic martensite phase to a strongly ferromagnetic austenite phase upon heating in alloy Ni45Co5Mn40Sn10 is given. The approximated expressions of efficiency and power output as functions of design parameters, material properties and environmental temperatures are derived. For most suitable working conditions, the efficiency and power output reach Curzon-Ahlborn's optimized results. Several related new methods for direct conversion of heat to electricity suggested by the underlying theory are also postulated.</p>
