The Ageing of Glass Fibres Used in Polymeric Composites
Abstract
Glass fibre composites are utilized widely as a lighter and corrosion resistant alternative for metals, in applications such as reactor and chemical transportation tanks, marine applications and wind turbines. Failure cases have however been reported and the reasons of failure range from errors during manufacture to stress corrosion or other forms of ageing in the composite.<br/>The aim of this study, presented in my Master’s thesis, was to compile and add upon the existing knowledge of the chemical processes which result in property loss in glass fibre reinforced polymer composites. The changes in the composition and structure of the glass were found to be significant and likely have an effect on the ageing of the composite as a whole.
