The effect of hypochlorite treatment on stainless steel performance and fouling in cooling water cycles
Abstract
Water-cooling using natural waters is typically utilizedfor cooling large industrial facilities such as powerplants. Cooling systems using natural water aresusceptible to biofouling, which refers to theundesirable accumulation of biotic deposits on a surface. In the industrial systems, the biofouling together withinorganic fouling and scaling can cause problems such asan increase in the flow resistance of pipelines or adecrease in the thermal transfer capacity of the heatexchangers, and corrosion. Chemical cleaning of theaffected area, for example hypochlorite treatment, is themain method used for removing unwanted biofilms in thecooling water systems. The corrosion behaviour of twostainless steels (AISI 316, SMO 254) in the cooling watercycle of a power plant using hypochlorite as anantifouling biocide and the efficiency of thehypochlorite treatment against fouling were studied here. The corrosion rate and biofouling were monitored duringthe three- month experiment period by using LPR-techniqueand a commercial biofouling-probe. Thechlorination pulse increased momentarily the corrosionrate of both stainless steels. The detected corrosionrates were so low that visible corrosion could not bedetected within the experiment time. The usedchlorination dose proved to be efficient againstbiofouling during the experiment period. The resultshighlight the importance of the optimization of usage ofthe biocides in both materials performance and biofoulingprevention.
