Pieces of increasing technical performance manufactured with recycled carbon fibers for competitive boating
Abstract
The missing link in the recycling of carbon fiber composites is the production of high performance parts with recycled carbon fibers. Only a high quality of the recycled fiber composites will prove the value of recycled carbon fibers. In this study, the properties of recycled fiber composites are compared to conventional glass or carbon fiber composites. It is shown that alignment and fiber length are key points to generate very interesting properties to recycled fiber composites. Four types of racing boat parts have been designed and built to demonstrate the potential and simplicity of these materials. All these parts sail successfully for a year on the navigator Marie Gendron’sCassiopéeracing boat. This work uses recycled carbon fibers reshaped by the I2M-Bordeaux realignment technology.
