Concrete confinement estimation in composite steel-concrete columns
Abstract
In this paper two methods of concrete confinement evaluation of composite steel-concrete columns are presented. First method is based on comparison between experimentally obtained ultimate loads with the theoretical bearing capacity of investigated columns computed according to the Eurocode 4. Second method is based on the investigation of the load distribution between concrete and steel parts of columns. Rüsch formula for stress-strain curve for the unconfined concrete and experimentally obtained strains for both steel and concrete are used. I—shaped two chord battened steel-concrete composite columns are investigated. In order to complement the research a numerical analysis in ABAQUS/Standard was conducted to visualize areas of high confinement of column’s concrete cores.
