Influence of grain size on the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy Al 6060
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to consider the relationship between corrosion resistance and grain size in aluminium alloy 6060. Grain size reduction down to about 500 nm was obtained by severe plastic deformation, performed using Incremental Equal Channel Angular Pressing (I-ECAP), which was recently developed as an efficient method of production ultrafine grained both sheet metaland thick plates. Samples investigated in terms of corrosion resistance have been deformed in I-ECAP todifferent value of true strain. The results were compared to those obtained for coarse grained, undeformed material. All samples have been investigated by potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization. Results of corrosion resistancewere correlated with materials microstructures. Not only average grain size but also size distribution was taken into consideration. Differences in the corrosion morphology between specimens with varying degrees of processing have been found. This was attributed to grain boundaries rearrangement which was induced during deformation
