Tribological behaviour of carbon thin films against bearing steel under continuous sliding in hydrogen environment
Abstract
Carbon thin films such as diamond like carbon (DLC)coatings have been studied extensively for many years andthey are already utilized in applications where lowfriction and low wear are needed. Yet, the understandingof the tribological behaviour of the carbon coatings inhydrogen environment is limited. This study concentrateson the tribological behaviour of the hydrogen-free andhydrogenated diamond like carbon films against bearingsteel under continuous sliding in hydrogen environment. The tribological experiments using pin-on-disc test rigshowed that DLC coatings provide lower frictioncoefficient and lower wear rate than uncoated 100Cr6 whensliding against 100Cr6 pin in hydrogen environment. Thehydrogen environment can however be influencing theadhesion behaviour of the DLC coatings detrimentallycausing delamination of the coating. The increase inwater impurity level of hydrogen does not show to affectthe friction coefficient of the DLC coatingssignificantly. Nevertheless, based on this study it canbe said that the a-C:H coatings provide more stablefriction behaviour compared to the ta-C type coatingswhen sliding against steel pin in hydrogen environmentregardless of the water impurity level.
