Analysis of two catalytic systems PtRhPd-PdAu and PtRh-PdAu after long-term exploitation
Abstract
In this paper we focused on surface analysis of the two catalytic systems acquired from the industrial reactors after 6 months exploitation. First one is a system including PtRhPd gauze for catalysis and PdAu gauze for catalysis and to capture platinum. Second is commonly used system composed of PtRh catalytic gauzes and PdAu gauzes for catalysis and to capture valuable elements. The investigation was performed using scanning electron microscope HITACHI 3500N with EDS system to analyse the distribution of elements. SEM observations showed intensive redevelopment of the surface of the wires. PtRh and PtRhPd catalytic gauzes are covered by characteristic cauliflower-shaped growths, which number and morphology depend on gas flow direction, and placement of the gauze in the reactor. Samples from the centre and outer part ofthe reactor differ in the degree of exploitation. Both PdAu gauzes surfaces are completely rebuild due to platinum capture phenomena. Surface of the gauzes is covered by spherical porous lumps, which size and morphology depends on the location of the gauze in the reactor. Microscopic observations also showed that the redevelopment of PdAu wires occurs deep into the material. EDS analysis showed that Pt recovery rate is much higher on samples from centre part of catalytic systems (especially on the gas-inflow side of the gauzes). Obtained results can be basis of further investigation of degradation mechanism of precious metals catalytic systems.
