The effect of coating characteristics on the coating performance of a-C:H and ta-C films
Abstract
DLC films cover a wide range of different carbon basedcoatings, starting from soft to extremely harddiamond-like carbon films. In this study two differenttypes of DLC films have been studied in respect of theirstress and strain characteristics and tribologicalperformance. The coatings are hydrogenated amorphouscarbon (a-C:H) coatings deposited by PECVD andtetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) coating deposited byfiltered arc technique. In order to evaluate themechanical behaviour of the coatings under load, 3D FEmodelling was carried out in combination with scratchtesting. Also the tribological performance was evaluatedwith pin-on-disc tests using stepwise increasing normalload. The 3D FEM model was developed for calculating thestress and strain distributions of DLC coated systems andto evaluate how coating thickness and elastic propertiesaffect the stress-strain state at crack initiationlocation. The simulation was compared to the findings toexperimental observations in scratch test contactconditions, when the spherical diamond tip was movingwith increased load on a coated surface. The coatingperformance was evaluated with scratch testing to detectthe crack generation as well as the coating adhesion. When combining the simulated coating characteristics withempirical observation of coating fracture patterns thecoating fracture performance and tolerance to crackingcould be evaluated. A major effect of the coating elasticmodulus on the stress and fracture behaviour of thecoatings was observed. In the tribological testing theboth coatings had a low friction performance. In thetribological testing with stepwise increasing load, thecritical load for coating delamination was higher for thea-C:H coating, which is in accordance with the results ofFE modelling of coating stress state.
