Natural fibre-reinforced biocomposites for 3D and 4D printing
Abstract
This work relates materials science and additive manufacturing to propose an overview of the applications of natural fibre-reinforced biocomposites in 3D and 4D printing. Natural fibres are sensitive to humidity, and this is one of their main disadvantages when used for structural purposes, but this can be exploited to trigger actuation, making natural fibre biocomposites a new class of smart materials, namely Hygromorph BioComposites (HBC). HBC can be used in 4D printing to develop specialized shape-changing mechanisms and selfassembly through different design strategies, highlighting natural fibre biocomposites as a trend in technological innovation.
