Ecodesign tips and EoL strategies for enhanced recyclability of integral welded fuselage panels made of Al-Li alloys
Abstract
Presentation of final results of Clean Sky 2 ReINTEGRA project (H2020 GA 886609), given by C.Delgado at the Clean Aviation Workshop "Recycling in Aviation" (Valencia, 16-17 Nov 2023)Abstract: The end of life (EoL) of novel reinforced aerostructures made of different Al-Li alloys, joined either by laser beam welding (LBW) or by friction stir welding (FSW), and coated with two innovative Cr-free surface treatments, was investigated at lab and pilot scale. The needs and optimal methods for disassembly, sorting and decoating were established for each combination of alloys and panel configuration, with the aim of achieving the maximum amount of panel scrap recycled back into aeronautical Al-Li alloys. The chemical compatibility of the remelted scrapped panels with four commercial Al-Li alloys was examined. Environmental impact screening of the four closed-loop recycling options per panel reference was used to rank the recycling alternatives. The EoL route that maximised closed-loop recycling, while minimising the environmental impacts and the loss of valuable alloying elements, was identified in each case. The design alternatives that hindered the recycling of integral welded panels were reported.AuthorsC Delgado1, A I Fernández-Calvo1, B García-Blanco2, P Dufour31AZTERLAN, (BRTA), Spain, 2CIDETEC, (BRTA), Spain, 3SONACA, Belgium
