Au-RE-TiO2 nanocomposites. Surface characteristics and photoactivity
Abstract
Photocatalysts based on TiO2co-doped with rare earth metal (RE) and gold nanoparticles havebeenpreparedusingasol-gelmethodandfollowedbygoldreduction.SpecificsurfaceareasofthemodifiedphotocatalystswerecalculatedbytheBrunauer-Emmett-Tellermethod(BET).Diffusereflectance spectra of the obtained photocatalysts were recordedwithaUV-Vis spectrophotometer (DRSUV-Vis).The influence of the type of rare earthmetal on photoactivity ofAu-RE-TiO2nanocompositesin model reaction manifested by toluene photodegradation inagas phase was investigated. The obtainedresults showed thatphotodegradation of toluene in the gas phase is possible over Au-RE-TiO2irradiatedby UV or Vis light. The Au-RE-TiO2photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2,did notcaused an increaseoftoluenedegradationintheairundervisiblelight.ThesamplesdopedwithEr3+orPr3+presentedthehighest activity in solar light among of Au-RE-TiO2.It was observed that both metal dopants affected thesurfaceareaofTiO2.TheAu-RE-TiO2photocatalystsrelativetoundopedTiO2exhibitedtheabsorptionproperties under Vis light
