Fatigue crack growth in railway steel
Abstract
Fatigue crack growth rate tests were performed according to the ASTM E647-08 standard, using C(T) specimens taken from a Spanish AVE train wheel and a UIC60 rail. Two different load ratios were used in order to obtain an extended range of crack propagation rates to account for different types of loading cycles observed in real operation. All the used specimens had a thickness B=13mm and with W=52mm. Since the fatigue crack growth rate problem is widely discussed in the literature, which also includes some studies in wheel and rail steels, these will be used for comparison and for the discussion of the new results presented. © Civil-Comp Press, 2012
