Multi-Layer Composite Based on Amorphous Materials and Quasicrystals, Deposited by Laser Ablation
Abstract
The microstructure of Ti25Zr20Ni27.5Cu27.5 (in at.%) alloy melt-spun at 26m/s (50μm thick, 3mm wide) was investigated by means of SEM and TEM methods. The as-received ribbon was almost completely amorphous. The microstructure of Al63.5Cu24Fe12.5 (in at.%) quasicrystals bulk alloy was investigated by means of the SEM method. The material contained the quasicrystalline phase. Both alloys were ablated with an ArF excimer laser and deposited on brass substrates. The deposited Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu thin layers were of order 400nm thick, while the Al63.5Cu24Fe12.5 quasicrystal was of order 300 nm thick. AFM examinations revealed smooth and uniform surface of the deposited layer for the Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu alloy, while the formation of sharp pyramids on the layer surface was identified in the Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal.
