Study on inclusion evolution through Si/Mn deoxidation in medium-carbon steels
Abstract

Highly stressed medium-carbon steels with demands for increased lifetime properties are sensitive regarding the final cleanness level. Size, composition and morphology of non-metallic inclusions are essentially influenced by the applied deoxidation practice. An improved deoxidation procedure for these steels substituting classical Al by Mn and Si is studied using laboratory tests in a so-called Tammann furnace and accompanying plant trials. The formed inclusion landscape and their modification over time is analyzed using manual and automated scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy measurements. Additionally, material tests (thermal-mechanical simulator, deformation dilatometer, fatigue test) are performed, enabling a comparison of the relation between inclusion and material properties for various scenarios.
