Chemical Stability of Alumina Ceramics in Sulphuric Acid
Abstract
<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The study of chemical stability of ceramics in acid and alkalis makes it possible to predict their service properties in these media. For this reason, the chemical resistance of cold isostatically pressed (CIP) high-purity alumina ceramics (99.8% Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>) was studied in different concentration of sulphuric acid (2 wt. %, 10 wt. % and 20 wt. %) at room temperature. Chemical stability was monitored by the determination of the amount of Al<jats:sup>3</jats:sup><jats:sup>%</jats:sup>, Mg<jats:sup>2</jats:sup><jats:sup>%</jats:sup>, Ca<jats:sup>2</jats:sup><jats:sup>%</jats:sup>, Na<jats:sup>%</jats:sup> Si<jats:sup>4</jats:sup><jats:sup>%</jats:sup>, and Fe<jats:sup>3</jats:sup><jats:sup>%</jats:sup> ions eluted in different concentrations of sulphuric acid by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The corrosion rate constants for CIP-alumina specimens after immersion in H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>SO<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> solution using different concentrations were determined. Increasing the concentration from 2 to 20 wt. % it was notified that the corrosion susceptibility in H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>SO<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> solutions for the CIP-alumina specimens at room temperature decreases.</jats:p>
