Wet milling versus co-precipitation in magnetite ferrofluid preparation
Abstract
Various uses of ferrofluids for technical applications continuously raise theinterest in improvement and optimization of preparation methods. This paperdeals with preparation of finely granulated magnetite particles coated witholeic acid in hydrocarbon suspensions following either chemicalco-precipitation from iron salt precursors or wet milling of micron sizemagnetite powder with the goal to compare the benefits and disadvantages ofeach method. Microstructural measurements showed that both methods gavesimilar magnetite particle size of 10-15 nm. Higher saturation magnetizationwas achieved for the wet-milled magnetite suspension compared to relativelyrapid co-precipitation synthesis. Different efficacies of ferrophaseincorporation into kerosene could be related to the different mechanisms ofoleic acid bonding to nanoparticle surface. The comparative data show thatwet milling represents a practicable alternative to the traditionalco-precipitation since despite of longer processing time, chemicals impact onenvironment can be avoided as well as the remnant water in the final product.
