Electrochemical investigation and thermodynamic assessment of the Mg-Pd system
Abstract
This work presents the results of electromotive force measurements, bycoulometric titration technique, for liquid and solid Mg-Pd alloys withconcentrations up to 0.70 mole fraction of Mg and at 918 K. Thesemeasurements enabled verification of the range of homogeneity of theoccurring phases and phase boundaries in the studied system.Based on theobtained results and other thermodynamic data found in the literature, thephase diagram of the Mg-Pd system was optimized using the CALPHAD method andab initio calculations. The thermodynamics of intermetallic phases, liquidphase, and solid solutions were described by the proper equations which canbe used in the future to calculate the multicomponent systems with the Mg-Pdsystem as one of the binary components. The thermodynamic calculationssuccessfully reproduced the Mg-Pd phase diagram.
