Serendipitous formation and characterization of K2[Pd(NO3)4]·2HNO3
Abstract
<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A potassium tetranitratopalladate(II) with the composition K<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>[Pd(NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>] · 2HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> was synthesized by a simple solvothermal process in a glass ampoule. The new compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group <jats:italic>P</jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1</jats:sub><jats:italic>/c</jats:italic> (no. 14) with the lattice parameters <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> = 1017.15(4), <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> = 892.94(3), <jats:italic>c</jats:italic> = 880.55(3) Å, and <jats:italic>β</jats:italic> = 98.13(1)° (<jats:italic>Z</jats:italic> = 2). The crystal structure of K<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>[Pd(NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>] · 2HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> reveals isolated complex [Pd(NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>2−</jats:sup> anions, which are surrounded by eight potassium cations and four HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> molecules. The complex anions and the cations are associated in layers which are separated by HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> molecules. K<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>[Pd(NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>] · 2HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> can thus be regarded as a HNO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> intercalation variant of <jats:italic>β</jats:italic>-K<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>[Pd(NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>]. The characterization is based on single-crystal X-ray and powder X-ray diffraction.</jats:p>
