R-Curve Measurement Instrumentation – Development and Application of a Novel System for Advanced Ceramics
Abstract
Motivation: --> Fracture strength and fracture toughness are important properties characterizing the mechanical resistivity of the material. --> Fracture toughness of many ceramic materials depends on the crack length, especially at small length scales of < 50 µm (R-Curve). --> R-Curves contain valuable information about strength behaviour and toughening mechanisms of the material. --> R-Curve measurements on brittle materials at low crack length scales requires special instrumentation and is known to be difficult and time consuming. ----- Need for an EXAKT instrument for Fracture Toughness and R-Curve measurements
