Experimental study on the relationship of mechanic and hydraulic state variables, and the dielectric properties of clays
Abstract
This contribution presents an experimental work in which standardized compaction tests on a fine-grained soil are conducted in combination with dielectric spectroscopy to determine the relative effective complex permittivity over a broad frequency range (1 MHz to 3 GHz). The idea is to investigate the influence of water content and density on the frequency dependent soil dielectric properties. However, the frequency dependent soil dielectric properties are also influenced by the mobility of water molecules in the soil matrix. Thus, soil suctions are measured to quantify the bonding forces acting on the water phase. The results give evidence of a strong physico-chemical relationship between dielectric relaxation processes and the soil-water interaction. Hence, the broadband electromagnetic techniques provide useful tools for the development of a better understanding of the complexity of coupled mechanichydraulic processes in fine-grained soils.
