The effect of borate on cerium film formation
Abstract

Trivalent cerium cations inhibit corrosion of aluminum alloys by the formation of a tetravalent cerium oxide film that stifled oxygen reduction. The film forms by precipitation under the alkaline conditions at the metal/solution interface. The precipitation is facilitated by the addition of hydrogen peroxide. In this work the addition of borate was also shown to stifle oxygen reduction. The film formed was trivalent cerium. Its formation can be accounted for as an insoluble cerium borate compound precipitating in the alkaline interfacial solution followed by physical deposition. copyright The Electrochemical Society.
