Development of thermographic inspection routine exploiting phase transition of water for moisture detection in aircraft structures
Abstract
Penetrated water in the composite sandwich structures hascaused problems in aircraft structures. Flight surfaceshave been lost during the flights, because moisturecorrodes the honeycomb and further reduces the strengthof the adhesive. Water can also cause additional defectsduring the composite repairs, which have resulted becauseof the expansion of the moisture (in closed cavity),hence causing skin blow core phenomena during the curingcycle (heating) of the repair.Thermographic investigation is done to find a suitableprocedure to find penetrated water from the compositeaircraft structures by cooling the whole structure, orseparated parts of the aircraft, under freezingconditions. Thermographic inspection based on the phasetransition of water exploits the phase transition energythat is needed for the water defrosting (melting).Advantage of this method is that no additional excitationsource is needed for the tests. Method based on phasetransition can be especially exploited during the longperiod of arctic weather conditions in Finland and othercold areas. Aircraft can be either inspected right aftera flight, or it can be left outside in freezingconditions overnight and inspected when it has beenbrought in to the maintenance hall to warm conditions.
