Cost-efficient hermetic fibre pigtailed laser module utilizing passive device alignment on an LTCC substrate
Abstract
A hermetic fibre pigtailed laser module utilizing passivedevice alignment on a low temperature co-fired ceramics(LTCC) substrate is demonstrated. The 3-dimensional shapeof the laminated and fired ceramic substrate provides thenecessary alignment structures including holes, groovesand cavities for the laser to fibre coupling. Theachieved passive alignment accuracy allows high couplingefficiency realizations of multi-mode fibre pigtailedlaser modules. The ceramic substrate is intrinsicallyhermetic and it opens up a possibility to produce costefficient hermetic packaging. In our concept hermeticsealing is produced by utilizing Kovar frame, which issoldered to an LTCC substrate. Kovar frame has a hole forfibre feed-trough and a hermetic glass-metal sealingbetween fibre and frame is processed using glass preform.
