Femto Second Pulsed Laser Deposition of Nanoparticulate Thin Film of Gd-5(SixGe1-x)(4)
Abstract
Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) using a femtosecond laser has improved the surface roughness, quality of thin films and deposition time significantly over nanosecond lasers. However characterizing these thin films especially the composition using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) is challenging. We report the successful growth and characterization of thin films of giant magnetocaloric Gd<inf>5</inf>Si<inf>1.3</inf>Ge<inf>2.7</inf> using femtosecond PLD. We also report that annealing of Gd<inf>5</inf>Si<inf>1.3</inf>Ge<inf>2.7</inf> thin film at 1000 K showed disappearance of particles on the film and the phase transition in the magnetic measurements. © 2015 IEEE.
