Electromagnetic tensor spectroscopy for sorting of shredded metallic scrap
Abstract
With the continuous increase in automobile use, there are now over 1 billion vehicles in use globally, millions of which are reaching their end of service life throughout the world. The automotive waste is a major source of materials in shredding plants and therefore, the appropriate recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV) has become a major concern. This paper presents a novel design of an electromagnetic tensor spectroscopy (EMTS) sensor system, which employs an electromagnetic array to determine the electrical conductivity of each metal piece, which can then be used to sort the metal type. This study reports the development, theoretical basis and performance of the EMTS sensor system. The results show that the inductive coil system performs adequately and are able to obtain spectra at high-speeds/throughput with good signal to noise.
