Evaluation of the sensitivity of transmission measurements at millimeter waves using patch antennas for non-invasive glucose sensing
Abstract

This paper presents a miniature setup and corresponding measurement results of a millimeter (mm) wave non-invasive glucose sensor for continuous monitoring of glucose levels for diabetic patients. The sensor comprises of two facing microstrip patch antennas operating at 60 GHz, placed across human tissue and a tank filled with glucose solution. Transmission of mm-waves is measured through the acrylic tank filled with water containing various glucose concentration. The S-parameters depend on the permittivity change on the microwave path and can be correlated to the glucose levels in water or blood.
