Afocal Shack-Hartmann Screen for an Instrument with an Accessible Pupil
Abstract
A low-cost, easy-to-implement wave-front sensor based on a Shack-Hartmann lenslet array is presented here. The sensor is based on an array of long focal-length lenslets combined with a negative lens collimating the lenslet images. Because of its afocal nature, the sensor can be mounted in every telescope equipped with focal reducers or instruments with an accessible reimaged pupil and a CCD camera as a detector. Every lenslet spot is imaged directly onto the instrument detector itself, making possible on-line wave-front sensing and telescope alignment checks. The wave-front sensor can be usefully exploited also after an aluminizing phase in order to easily check the mirror alignment. The sensor described here is presently mounted on the 1.82 m telescope of the Astronomical Observatory of Padova (Asiago, Italy).
