Dielectric and structural properties of dipyridinium iodide triiodide
Abstract

A new pyridinium compound, dipyridinium iodide triiodide, [C 5 NH 6 ] 2 + I - I 3 - , was studied by X-ray diffraction and dielectric permittivity measurements. Both its structure and dielectric properties are unique within the group of pyridinium salts. The room temperature structure is orthorhombic, space group Fddd, Z=16, a=14.208(1), b=16.320(2), c=28.410(3) . At 276.3(5) K the crystal undergoes a first-order phase transition to the low-temperature phase. This transition is induced by the ordering of the cations, which are also responsible for two dielectric relaxation processes disclosed at low temperatures. © 2002 Taylor and Francis.
