Evaluation and modelling of low-temperature fracture properties of asphalt binders in thin film by means of the local fracture test
Abstract
The experimental study described in this paper investigated the fracture properties at low temperatures of asphalt binders. A specific test method, the Local Fracture Test, was used to this purpose. The test consists in subjecting a thin film of binder inserted between two convex steel protuberances simulating two aggregates to tensile loads at predefined displacement rates. The study combined laboratory measurements and numerical simulation. A FEM model was developed to simulate the evolution of stiffness in presence of a crack of variable size inside the sample. The modelling method integrates both viscoelasticity with the 2S2P1D model and sample geometry. The responses of materials were compared based on fracture energy determined from force-displacement curves and the time-temperature superposition principle was applied to study the influence of displacement rate on the energy. A specific criterion was also proposed to determine critical fracture temperature of binder. Outcomes of the research showed the effectiveness of the adopted methodology in evaluating the fracture properties of investigated materials. Moreover, a high correlation between the critical temperatures derived from Local Fracture Test and the glass transition temperatures derived from Dynamic Mechanical Analysis was found.
