Preparation and characterization of ceramic membrane by using palm fibers as pore forming agent
Abstract
Ceramic membranes captured much attention due to the chemical and thermal stability, and high separation efficiency. In this study, the ball clay ceramic membranes were prepared with slip casting method. Palm fibres in range of 0 wt.% to 40 wt.% were used as pore forming agent. Membranes produced were characterized by using Archimedes Method and Universal Testing machine for porosity and density, and compressive strength, respectively. While Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to observe the morphology of the ceramic membrane. As the amount of palm fibres increase from 0 wt.% to 40 wt.%, the porosity was found increasing from 36% to 54%, while the density and compressive strength were decreasing with 2.5 g/cm3 to 1.7 g/cm3, and 8.37 MPa to 1.42 MPa, respectively. Therefore, the amount of palm fibres greatly influence the properties of ceramic membrane. These ceramic membranes are highly potential to be applied for filtration test due to high in porosity value over 40%.
