High-coercivity ultralight transparent magnets
Abstract
The synthesis of magnetic silica-aerogel by dispersing hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B particles in a sol during a fast sol-gel process was discussed. It was found that the composites retained most of the outstanding properties of their constituents: the large coercivity and moderate remanence of the magnetic powders and the transparency and low density of silica aerogels. It was suggested that due to this combination of properties, this type of material should be considered as a potential candidate for applications in the fields of magneto-optics and magnetic actuators.
