Carbohydrates@MOFs
Abstract
MOFs have demonstrated outstanding properties for the protectionand controlled release of different bio-entities, from proteins toliving cells. Carbohydrates, as pure molecules or as a component ofproteins and cells, perform essential biological functions. Thus, anunderstanding of the role of carbohydrates in the formationof MOF-based bio-composites will facilitate their application tobiotechnology and medicine. Here, we investigate the role ofcarbohydrate molecular weight and chemical functionalization inthe formation of carbohydrate@MOF composites. We find thatchemical functionalization, such as carboxylation, that leads to anenhancement of metal cation concentration at the surface of themolecule triggers the rapid self-assembly of the MOF material,zeolitic-imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8). Furthermore, we determinethe encapsulation efficiency and measure the release properties ofthe carbohydrate under controlled conditions. Our findings showthat MOFs can be used to prepare a new class of biocomposites forthe delivery of carbohydrate-based therapeutics.
