Combining green self-healing coatings for metal protection
Abstract
Metals are used extensively in modern society in a range of applications frominfrastructure to aircraft to consumer products. The protection of metals, primarily from corrosion, has been an active area of materials science for many years. However, over the last twenty years changing regulations governing both environment issues as well as human health has driven even greater activity in this field. The technologies required to address these regulatory changes present some of the most exciting challenges in materials science. This review examines novel thinking in the areas of “green” inhibitors and self healing materials that is being harnessed to address these new challenges and the exciting materials science that forms the toolkit being used to develop new protective systems.
