Effect of out-gassing from polymeric encapsulant materials on the lifetime of perovskite solar cells
Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as an exciting thin-film photovoltaic (PV) technology due to their high efficiency and applicability for low-cost roll-to-roll fabrication. The progression of this technology towards commercialization requires a concerted effort to understand and address the degradation mechanisms currently hindering the longevity of PSCs. Cell instability in the presence of ambient moisture and oxygen is a dominating factor undermining their operational lifetime and thus the development of encapsulation materials and processes is central to addressing this instability. Herein, we report the results of a study on the effect of flexible encapsulant pre-conditioning (drying) on the durability of five PSC types with varying perovskite composition and device architecture. Performance testing over 1500 h revealed that two of the three conventionally structured (n-i-p) PSC devices were stable irrespective of moisture-content level in the barrier materials, whereas both inverted (p-i-n) device types suffered significant degradation when encapsulated with barrier materials without pre-conditioning. The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency measurements and spectroscopic impedance analysis of the encapsulated devices demonstrated the extent to which out-gassing can impact the interfacial electrical properties of the PSCs. This study reveals the critical importance of appropriate conditioning treatments of flexible encapsulant materials prior to encapsulation for achieving optimal long-term stability of PSCs.
