Investigation of an electroactive immobilized azomethine for potential electrochromic use
Abstract
An electroactive small molecule consisting of three triphenylamines and two azomethines was prepared with a pendant oxetane moiety. The electroactive molecule was immobilized on transparent electrodes by photochemically mediated acid catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of the oxetane. Positive and negative patterns of polymer films could also be prepared by copolymerizing the electroactive azomethine monomer with a trioxetane cross-linker. The resulting cross-linked films could be reversibly switched between their neutral and oxidized states with applied electrochemical potentials for upwards of 80 min. The colors of the films switched reversibly between yellow (400 nm) and purple (upwards of 790 nm) when applying an electrochemical potential between ca. 100 mV and 1.1 V vs. Ago, respectively. The thickness of the electroactive film varied between 200 and 1000 nm with a 700 nm film having the optimal electrochromic performance.</p>
