Post-experimental analysis of a solid oxide fuel cell stack using hybrid seals
Abstract
A post-experimental analysis of a SOFC stack ispresented. The stack was operated for 1800 h at 700 °Cwith air and hydrogen and contained hybridglass-Thermiculite 866 seals. The goal of this work wasto investigate the sealing microstructure and possiblecorrosion during mid-term operation. It was found thathybrid seals could effectively compensate formanufacturing tolerances of cells and other componentsdue to the compliance of the glass layer. Additionally, different interfaces were investigated for corrosion.Corrosion was not observed at two-phase interfaces suchas Crofer 22 APU/glass, glass/electrolyte andglass/Thermiculite 866. The three-phase interface betweenCrofer 22 APU/glass/hydrogen exhibited no corrosion. Someevidence of non-systematic corrosion was found at theCrofer 22 APU/glass/air interface. The possible reasonsfor the corrosion are discussed. Lastly, dual exposure tohumid hydrogen and air of the 0.2 mm Crofer 22 APUinterconnect had no detrimental effect on the corrosioncompared to air exposure. Overall the hybrid seals usedin combination with the thin interconnects were found tobe a promising solution due to the low leak rate andlimited material interactions.
