Competition between 3d and 4f magnetism in Ce2 Fe2 S5
Abstract
<p>Magnetic susceptibility measurements and neutron powder diffraction were performed on the rare-earth transition-metal sulfide Ce<sub>2</sub> Fe<sub>2</sub> S<sub>5</sub> to study the effect of the substitution of nonmagnetic La<sup>3 +</sup>(4 f<sup>0</sup>) by Ce<sup>3 +</sup>4 f<sup>1</sup>) . Ce<sub>2</sub> Fe<sub>2</sub> S<sub>5</sub>, which is isostructural to La<sub>2</sub> Fe<sub>2</sub> S<sub>5</sub>, contains Fe<sup>2 +</sup> ions within chains of iron-sulfur octahedra and tetrahedra that are interconnected by Ce<sup>2 +</sup> ions. Two antiferromagnetic phases, both with the propagation vector τ = (frac(1, 2) frac(1, 2) 0), are observed: at 5 K ≤ T ≤ 80 K ordering of the Fe<sup>2 +</sup> moments is found; at T ≤ 5 K the Ce<sup>3 +</sup> ions also participate in the magnetic ordering.</p>
