Comparative study of static and cyclic fatigue of ZrB2-SiC ceramic composites
Abstract
Room temperature time dependent static and cyclic fatigue of ZrB2-32 vol% SiC and ZrB2-45 vol% SiC particulate ceramic composites has been studied. It was established that the presence of the grain bridging mechanism acting during static and cyclic loading plays an important role in determining a lifetime and overall time dependent mechanical performance of ZrB2-SiC composites. It was also established that the cohesive strength of grain boundaries of the composites is a determining factor if the grain bridging will or will not occur during crack growth as the grain boundaries strength will determine the path of the moving crack. The availability of grain bridging was very limited in ZrB2-32 vol% SiC leading to the absence of the cyclic fatigue effect in this composite while grain bridging occurs in ZrB2-45vol%SiC contributing to the cyclic fatigue effect which limits the lifetime of the composite. This difference in microstructure was responsible for the absence and presence of R-curve behavior in ZrB2-32vol%SiC and ZrB2-45vol%SiC ceramic composites, respectively.
