Nitriding of 316 stainless steel in molten fluoride salt by an electrochemical technique
Abstract
Electrochemicalnitridingoftype316stainlesssteel(316SS)inmoltenfluoridesalt(LiF–KF,FLiK)contain-ingLi3Nwasinvestigated.FormationofchromiumnitrideCrNandironnitride-Fex(x>8)Nwasconfirmed. CyclicvoltammogrammeasurementsandelectrolysistreatmentwerecarriedoutusinganAl–Lialloyref-erenceelectrodeat873K.Afterpotentiostatictreatmentat1.0Vvs.Li/Li + for100min,thespecimenwas characterizedbySEM,XPS,EPMA,andXRD.SEMobservationrevealedthattheinitiallysmoothsurface changedintoaruggedstructurecoveredbyawrinklestructureabout1–2minwidthafterelectrolysis. XPSanalysisrevealedthatchromiumnitride(CrN)wasselectivelyformedatthesurfacelayer.According totheEPMAanalysis,thetreatmentpromotednitrogendiffusionfromthesurfacetoadepthof35m. CrNwasformedfromthesurfacetoadepthof2m.Itwasdeterminedthatironnitride-Fex(x>8)N wasformedfromtheretoadepthof35masaninsidediffusionlayer,butneitherFe2NnorFe4Nwas detected.FormationofCrNand-Fex(x>8)NwasalsoconfirmedbyXRDmeasurementandXPSanalysis.
