Scandium-rich ternary coloring variants of the cubic Ag7+xMg26–x type
Abstract
<jats:sec><jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The scandium-rich intermetallic compounds Sc<jats:sub>50</jats:sub><jats:italic>T</jats:italic><jats:sub>13</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>(<jats:italic>T</jats:italic> = Ni, Ru, Pd) were synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum crucibles in an induction furnace. The samples were studied through Guinier powder patterns and their structures were refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data. The Sc<jats:sub>50</jats:sub><jats:italic>T</jats:italic><jats:sub>13</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>phases are site occupancy (coloring) variants of the aristotype Ag<jats:sub>7+<jats:italic>x</jats:italic></jats:sub>Mg<jats:sub>26–<jats:italic>x</jats:italic></jats:sub>(<jats:italic>Fm</jats:italic><jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math> {3} </jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mover><mml:mrow><mml:mn>3</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>¯</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mover></mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula>,<jats:italic>cF</jats:italic>264). Refinements of the occupancy parameters indicated one mixed occupied site for each crystal, leading to the refined compositions Sc<jats:sub>50</jats:sub>Ni<jats:sub>13.16(1)</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>2.84(1)</jats:sub>, Sc<jats:sub>49.59(1)</jats:sub>Ru<jats:sub>13</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>3.41(1)</jats:sub>, and Sc<jats:sub>50</jats:sub>Pd<jats:sub>13.65(2)</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>2.35(2)</jats:sub>. The complex structures can be explained by a condensation of cubes (CN 8), sphenocorona (CN 10), and icosahedra (CN 12). The samples with nickel and palladium are Pauli paramagnets.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Graphic abstract</jats:title></jats:sec>
