Hot workability, microstructural control and rate-controlling mechanisms in cast-homogenized AZ31 magnesium alloy
Abstract
The hot working behavior of homogenized as-cast AZ31 magnesium alloy was investigated to optimize the parameters, control the microstructure, and establish the rate-controlling mechanisms in the primary processing stage of the alloy workability. The efficiency of power dissipation occurring through microstructural changes during deformation was derived by comparing the nonlinear power dissipation occurring instantaneously in the work piece with that of a linear dissipater. Cylindrical alloy specimens with 10mm diameter and 15mm height were machined from the central region of the homogenized billet, with longer axis of the compression specimens positioned in diametral plane of the cast billet. The grain size of alloys increase with temperature, and the increase becomes steep after 400°C. Any fluctuation in the applied process parameters in the bifurcation region can cause abnormal changes in dissipative energy state of the alloy.
