Damage Analysis in 3D Woven SiC/SiC Ceramic Matrix Composite
Abstract
This chapter discusses mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms of a 3D woven interlock SiC/SiC composites subjected to uniaxial tension through an experiment. Digital Image Correlation, Acoustic Emission and microscopic observations were simultaneously used to characterize mechanical behavior and monitor progressive damage. These adequate experimental techniques show a good agreement for locating damage and then estimating damage progress. Experimental data also show uncommon out-of-plane and shear strains evolution during tensile loading due to its 3D woven architecture, inducing complex damage mechanisms and thus impacting crack propagation. The SiC/SiC composite manufactured by SAFRAN Herakles was processed with the slurry cast MI technique. A 3D woven interlocking SiC fibers preform was then coated by a thin layer of Boron Nitride interphase. SiC particulate and molten Si were finally infiltrated.
