Active packaging functions. Part 2. Functional films
Abstract
S.28-30 ; Moisture regulating packaging and antimicrobial active films protects food and keeps it fresh longer. Moisture absorbers bind water vapor, thereby preventing products from absorbing water. A moisture absorbent film is Alcan Packaging's 'Formpack', which consists of aluminum composite for tablet blisters closed by a cover film from aluminum composite. The blister film contains a moisture absorbent layer with calcium oxide as the drying agent on the inside of the layer. It is covered with a polyolefin layer that prevents direct contact between the moisture absorbent layer and the product, while functioning as sealing layer. Antimicrobial active packaging is used to prevent and/or suppress microbial growth on food. It thereby lengthens shelf life and quality in packaged food. The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Germany has developed an antimicrobial packaging using sorbic acid. It combines the packaging principle with targeted food preservation. ; 100 ; Nr.2
