The HEXIT (High Energy X-ray Imaging Telescope) balloon-borne mission
Abstract
The HEXIT balloon-borne experiment is devoted to the validation of new-generation hard X-ray (20-70 keV) telescopes based on focusing multilayer optics and high Z solid-state detectors. Moreover, the gain achieved by means of concentration techniques will allow us the observation with unprecedented flux sensitivity and angular resolution of hard X-ray sources. The production of the multilayer mirrors is the Ni electroforming replication, while the detectors will be formed by arrays of CdZnTe pixels. It is also envisaged the possibility of hosting aboard a prototype of mosaic crystals Bragg concentrator prototype to increase the energy working range up to 140 keV. The attitude control, which is a particularly important subsystem since it has to match the high imaging capabilities of the telescope (30 arcsec), is based on a GPS antenna array working in parallel to a star/Sun-sensor system. The first HEXIT flight is scheduled in the 2005 year from the Trapani/Milo (Sicily) base operated by ASI....
