Microwave absorption and its thermo-mechanical consequences in heterogeneous rocks
Abstract
<p>A comprehensive simulation concept of the stress and crack formation due to microwave irradiation in a two-component hard rock is proposed. The goal of the present work is to study the influence of the heterogeneous structure of rock materials on the crack initiation as well as propagation. Thus a Finite Difference Time Domain simulation (FDTD) is performed in order to assess the influence of the microstructure on the electric field distribution. The rock morphology is simulated by an artificial 2D microstructure containing absorbing discs in a non-absorbing matrix. In a subsequent thermo-mechanical Finite Element simulation (FE) the stresses and cracks are computed. Conclusions for the influence of the micromechanics on the crack initiation and propagation are drawn. First results indicate that the stresses obtained by selective heating an inhomogeneous rock become large enough to initiate and propagate cracks. They are supported by preliminary experiments on hard rock samples.</p>
