Microstructure evolution in aluminium 6060 during Incremental ECAP
Abstract
An AA6060 Al-Mg-Si alloy was used to investigate the evolution of microstructure on X, Y and Z planes after processing by Incremental Equal Channel Angular Pressing (IECAP) at room temperature up to 4 passes. The basic microstructural parameters (mean grain size, grain boundary statistics, microtexture) were evaluated together with Vickers microhardness and tensile properties. Noticeable changes in mechanical properties were interlinked to microstructural parameters acquired by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The relationships obtained are discussed in terms of the microstructure evolution during plastic deformation, which was characterized by both value of strain applied and positions of shearing plane. The results show that there is a gradual evolution in both the hardness and the microstructure with increasing number of passes. Differences in amount of low-angle and high-angle boundaries are found to be connected with value of true strain as well
